Achieving goals starts with having "SMART" goals: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time (bound or framed). My favorite is "R" - is this goal relevant to where you are going and what you're trying to do? If not, why are you adding it to your list?
SMART Goals are a great way to check that your goals make sense in the context of your company, department, or team. Whether you're doing strategic planning, annual business plans, or working on a team project, using the SMART criteria helps to cover the essential elements of success.
S = Specific - What are the tangible outcomes? What will be different, better, or beneficial as a result of achieving this goal?
M = Measurable - How can we track progress? If it's not a pure "numbers" metric, what else can we observe/experience that would signal a shift? How will we know we are on the right track? What will be different in the day-to-day as this goal is implemented?
A = Attainable - Realistic goals that are challenging AND attainable stand a better chance of success, especially when the team can see some early progress and an implementation plan that is achievable in addition to their other responsibilities.
R = Relevant - This confirms that the goal serves a relevant purpose for the company, department, team, and/or individuals. If you cannot draw a clear line between what you're being asked to do and it's relevance, why are you doing it?
T = Time (-bound or -frame) - Specify a deadline, monitor progress, and build in time to adjust/adapt as needed.
If you HAVE a goal, use the SMART guidance to double-check that it is complete. Are you clear on the outcomes? How you'll measure success? An so on.
If you are designing your goal, use the SMART guidance for the discussion, and ask the group questions that get at these five core elements of an effective goal.
